Products such as Ovasitol, Thorne Ovarian Care, and Flo Ovarian Support have been all over my social media feeds lately. Creators have been promoting them by saying inositol helped them get pregnant, have more energy, regulate their cycles, and more. So with any supplement that seems to be trending, I do a lot (and I mean hours and hours) of research on it. So before you go and buy a new supplement, read this post, do your research, and PLEASE talk to your doctor!
So what exactly is inositol?
Inositol, often called vitamin B8, is a form of sugar that can be found in your body. It can also be found in certain foods and supplements. Inositol is not a vitamin, but instead a supplement. Inositol comes in 3 supplement forms, Myo-inositol, D-chiro-inositol, and inositol hexaphosphate.
But isn't sugar bad for you?
Not all sugar is bad for you! Labeling something as inherently bad is so harmful, especially when we actually need inositol for cell development and growth.
What are the benefits of inositol?
-Reduces risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc.
-Helps relieve symptoms of PCOS (we love that)
-Reduces risk of gestational diabetes and preterm birth (we also love this)
-Lowers cholesterol
-Helps the body process insulin
-May reduce symptoms of depression
How does inositol help with fertility and cycle regulation?
There is some research stating that inositol can promote ovulation which can lead to increased chances of getting pregnant. Before you just start taking inositol, first you need to know if you're even ovulating. One way to check is by talking to your doctor and getting testing done. You can also start tracking your BBT.
So should I take inositol?
Maybe! I think it depends on your life and health concerns. I do not think inositol is the end all be all of the supplements. I do not think it benefits everyone. I think you should consult your doctor and see if inositol would work for you. If you are struggling with PCOS and/or infertility, it may help you!
