You have probably heard people refer to their menstrual cycles as a moon cycle. Or maybe you've read The Moon Cycle Cookbook I recommended. Maybe you've been obsessed with Melanie Martinez's song, Moon Cycle. And you've probably asked, "Does menstruation actually have a connection with the moon?" The short answer is that there is no scientific evidence that the two are connected. But, we also know that science cannot prove everything. So let's dive in and look at the correlation between the moon and menstruation. Please remember, correlation does not mean causation. Just because something correlates does not prove that it is factual.
---
The lunar and menstrual cycles are both approximately 29 days. The lunar and menstrual cycles both have phases. These phases are often the same lengths of time. The new moon correlates with menstruation, first quarter with follicular, full moon with ovulation, third quarter with luteal. But this order can also be switched around. In addition to this concept, it is said that menstruating during different lunar cycles is believed to bring out different attributes.
There have been many studies on this topic and the conclusions are mixed. You can read all about these studies in the sources I left at the bottom of this post.
Many religions and cultures believe that there is a link between the moon and menstruation. Which there probably once was, but artificial light and modern lifestyles would have changed this. You can also read about this in the sources below.
You may be wondering if there is any benefit to syncing your cycle with the moon and there are no scientific benefits. However, there may be spiritual benefits. A study also showed that women who begin their period on a new moon have a higher chance of getting pregnant.
If you are interested in trying to sync your cycle with the moon, you can do so by comparing your period tracker to the moon cycle calendar. There is also a period tracker app called Stardust which links your period, the moon, astrology, etc. It is a good app if you don't already use a period tracker (they do not share your data).
That being said, it is likely that your period will line up with the moon cycle at one time or another. Your period does not need to line up to the moon. Having a menstrual cycle that lines up with the moon cycle is fun, but not something you need to have.
Happy Menstruating!
