If you have a period, chances are you deal with PMS on some level. PMS has a wide variety of symptoms ranging from physical to emotional.
For the purpose of this blog post, we are going to focus on the emotional symptoms of PMS and compare them to the symptoms of PMDD.
PMS and PMDD both have symptoms such as irritability, mood swings, anxiety, and low mood, but PMDD is more severe. PMDD is a hormonal based psychological disorder while PMS is a bormonal based syndrome. PMDD can be dibilitated and disabling. PMDD is much more difficult to treat than PMS. Experts don't exactly know what causes PMDD, but there are some factors they consider when diagnosing and treating PMDD. Those with PMDD may be hypersensitive to hormonal shifts over a 28 day cycle, they may have a severe hormonal imbalance, they may also experience more severe serotonin shifts during their menstrual cycle, and/or they may have a risk factor that predisposes them to PMDD (such as chronic stress, obesity, trauma, mental health disorders, autism, etc).
PMDD' symptoms are:
-Feeling Angry
Feeling Depressed
-Mood Swings
-Anxiety
-Feeling Hopeless
-Tension
-Inability to Focus
-Feeling Overwhelmed
-Extreme Fatigue
-Loss of Interest in Activity that are Usually Fun
-Suicidal Thoughts
If you think you may have PMDD, please talk to your primary care physician, OB-GYN, and/or mental health professional so that they can get you the care you need. Menstruating is never easy, but it is not supposed to be dibilitating.
