Organic Menstrual Care

(Art by Candace Napier)

I am angry. I am hurting. I am beyond pissed off. I am fuming. This is absolutely despicable and it really breaks my heart to make this post because menstrual care brands should not be poisoning us.

I made a post about organic tampons on a past blog I ran and featured This is L. This was back when they were a small start-up trying to create a cheaper organic tampon that was readily available. They eventually sold to Proctor & Gamble and now they are being exposed on Tiktok. It absolutely breaks my heart that so many people trusted this brand and now are developing fertility issues, ovarian cysts, and in some cases cancer because this brand uses titanium dioxide to whiten their "organic" cotton tampons.

I don't want to write this post to freak you out about the tampons you're using, I want to educate you. Because knowledge is power and they don't want you to have power.

The FDA regulates tampons as a class III medical device, which can expose consumers to significant risks.  Companies don't even need to list ingredients nor do they need to put truthful statements on their labels. They can say whatever they'd like about their products and you're just supposed to believe them. Now most companies do list their ingredients, but honestly have you ever read the ingredients on a tampon box, or do you just throw the box in your shopping cart? I used to never read the ingredients.

Tampons often have pesticides, bleach, dyes, and fragrances added to them. Why would anyone in their right mind think it was okay to put any of these things, which are all hormone disrupters, in a vagina?

Not only are these things bad for everyone, but they are also especially bad for those who suffer from reproductive health issues, such as PCOS and endometriosis. My pelvic floor physical therapist urged me to stop using conventional tampons because they can actually increase your pelvic pain. INCREASE IT! This is of course due to the chemicals they add to them. Conventional tampons also increase the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which can be deadly if left untreated.

Now after reading all this, you're probably wondering which brands are safe. Well luckily for you, I have done a lot of research on this topic. Alternatively, you can use a menstrual cup, disc, or period underwear. All of which I will discuss in later posts.

Below I will list some of the brands that I know for a fact are safe from bleach, dyes, pesticides, and titanium dioxide.
